Net Field Trip
Habbo Hotel vs MSN
I decided to sign up for the Habbo Hotel 3d chat room and compare and contrast it to the ever famous MSN messenger. I found that personalising the character on habbo positively contributed to my characteristics, which people can see when talking and interacting with me in. The 3D environment definatly promotes a better/more personel environment. This is becuase you are actually speaking to someone, character face to face in an internet world. The movements and application you can use in the hotel also demonstrate a superiorioty over Msn messenger. In the online Habbo Hotel i was under the alias of Lusta Ruster. My real name is Harrison Moncrieff, i wanted a diverse and wierd name so the people i speak to online couldnt tract me down using the like of Facebook and Myspace search.
I use msn alot and the people on my contact list are the people i know personally. The friends i have made on Habbo hotel i am not personel friends with and this is evident when i speak to them about certain topics. For instance i wouldnt give details about my locations for the weekend to people on habbo hotel, but i would for friends on Msn. There is alot of socialising on Habbo Hotel that differs many people use Habbo to make new friends and partners in real life.
i belive the 3d aspect makes it easier to understand who you are talking to rather than someone on the other end of a chatt box. Habbo Hotel does allow for individualisation and characteristics, which helps when speaking to a stranger. Overall i believe Habbo Hotel is a great way to meet new people, though Msn is still safer becuase of your specific friends list.

Tutorial 8 Word & Excel
During the class we worked on some exercises which involved Microsoft Office programs like Excel and Word. We Used these programs in ways that educated and demonstrated our understanding. Even though i thought i was sufficient with these applications I have to confess that I struggled with some of the tasks. I believe that the environment is really complex, so everyone using these programs has to have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Software and how it all works.
I encountered some problems when, I tried to insert a chart to represent my data, this is because of the columns and the data. Some of the formulas were tricky to master aswell. After i got the hang of the formulas and data columns is was easily understood. This can be very effective in the future for research and assistance.
I found the excel exercise quite simple, having precise attention to detail makes it a bit easier. I use excel most days for work aswell which definatly helps the situation. And yes excel does make a large difference with completing tasks.

WIKIPEDIA
I dont mind a good bit of information from Wiki, it was interesting to know about all the false information and discussion that goes on.
These two website explain some really interesting info about Wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About#Strengths.2C_weaknesses.2C_and_article_quality_in_Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Why_Wikipedia_is_not_so_greatikipedia:Why_Wikipedia_is_not_so_great
I watched a movie recently and thought it would be interesting to research on Wikipedia. The Beach, 2000
The article was very accurate with its information after looking up information on google about the plot, characters and themes i found that Wiki had them covered. Wiki cover the plot, cast, difference between the Film and Novel, controversy, soundtrack and themes. The information that wiki presented for the article easily covered the basic information needed for a research project on the film. Yes this article does cover the wikipedia quidelines for useful articles. This article doesnt really have an arguement, its more of a documentary of the events of the movie.
Rachel Bilson
I choose to look up one of my favourite celebrities for my next check up on Wikipedia. Wiki gave a very descriptive annalysis of the actor, from her career to personel life. This article doesnt follow the wikipedia normal facts of understanding, but is simple to follow and the information is correct according to yahoo and google. the article is a positive arguement for the actor and demonstrates all her good traits and qualities.

Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction", i'm not sure if technology allows just anyone to be an artist?? Programs like; Photoshop, iTunes Garage Band, Illustrator, iDVD etc (basically anything mac shop pro) are allowing people to edit and generate their own version of art, music and photos and help too personalise and characterise.
What does that mean for Art?
People who do create art from their computers, be it music, images, videos etc, are only artists as far as people accept them as artists. In my opinion. People that record songs and music on their computer becuase they dont have the money or access to a studio should continue. This means nothing for Art, just that more people are attempting to crack into the evergrowing culture. Furthermore skilled professionals will still be ranked higher due to their quality.
In my opinion photoshopped images are not authentic.
People who plagerise and utalize other people's work are not authentic in my eyes. There are some cases where an origional piece of work has been reformatted and photoshopped completely to create something newer and better, which could be used as authentic.
Benjamin refers to Aura as - The authenticity of a thing is the essence of all that is transmissible from its beginning, ranging from its substantive duration to its testimony to the history which it has experienced. yes digital things have an aura.

Tutorial 4 Part 2
How do search engines rank the stuff they find on the Internet?
Search engines like Google and Yahoo & MSN have a self created index with your business listed in it. The search engines organises these listings with relevant keywords relating to your website. So when a user types in the relevant keyword into the search engine it generates results relating to the keywords. The process by which it does this is very complex and is forever changing.
Who or What Makes one Page more useful than another one so it will appear at the top?
If Google has seen a definition for the word or phrase on the Web, it will retrieve that information and display it at the top of your search results.
What are some Favourite search engines?
www.google.com -Has a vast amount of knowledge and always has good results.
www.wikipedia.com - Good information form an encyclypedia's point of view.
www.yahoo.com Another major seach engine that has alot of useful info.
www.askjeeves.com A seconday search engine, if i'm struggling for information.

Essay
How Music Downloading is affecting CD sales
Throughout the world people from all ages are exploiting the music industry by downloading songs illegally from file sharing programs and systems. The main argument at hand is the simplicity of downloading a 4 minute song for free, as opposed to purchasing a $25 CD. All countries throughout today’s society are guilty of illegally downloading music from p2p file sharing systems like Kazaa, Bearshare, Limewire and Imesh. The cost difference involved with obtaining music and downloading music defines the current situation and demonstrates the accessibility of the two. Music store universally are suffering in revenue and productivity, due to advancements in connection speed, which is allowing for more downloads at a quicker speed. Finally artists and music producers are also affected from pirated music and the music industry is looking at new methods to rectify the current situation.
The current situation of downloading music illegally is increasing as countries are evolving digitally and people of all ages are becoming computer savvy. An article by Bruce Einhorn 2007 states that, China has become the world capital of pirated music and Almost 100% of the world’s music downloaded from the Net is stolen. With this in mind the ranking of downloaded music by country is as follows, Asia, America, Europe, Africa then Australia. Jesse Harlin 2007 in his article explains that, with the rise in pirated music, labels these days are more interested than ever in finding additional revenue streams to help off-set slumping sales.
The Chart below is a perfect demonstration of the current download vs. CD crises.
http://www.bridgeratings.com/Images/Music%20Media%20Purchase%20Trending.png
The Chart above is a general overview of the world’s music industry as a whole.
The chart shows a distinct decrease in CD sales since downloading music became available in 2000 and a trend showing an increase in online downloading. This summarises the current situation and depicts the vision of things to come.
The cost difference between downloading a 4 minute song form the internet as opposed to purchasing a $25 CD is disappointing. The costs involved with downloading music consist of actually owning a computer and a connection to the internet (pay per month), which I currently pay $60 for unlimited downloads with cable. It’s free to download the programs like kazaa and Bearshare, which allow for the actual file searching and sharing. Kazaa can be downloaded from this website http://www.kazaa.com/us/index.htm. The costs of purchasing a CD is currently around $25 give or take depending on the artists, number of tracks and fluctuation. The reality at hand is, for the same price of 3 CD’s I can purchase the internet for a month and download thousands of songs from various artists. The website http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Internet/2004/music_downloading.asp describes that, for many people it is as simple as opening one of many peer-to-peer file share programs, selecting the tracks, downloading and burning to a CD-ROM. This summarises the ease of downloading music and also the cost variations.
Music stores and companies are suffering due to the increase in music downloading. Statistics show a decrease in staff internationally and furthermore a drop off in CD advertising both on the radio and television. An article from the website http://jscms.jrn.columbia.edu/cns/2006-03-14/spector-cdextinction states that, the CD just doesn’t have the cool factor that it once did and that within five years were going to see a much lower level of CD purchasers. This demonstrates the old fashion enjoyment of buying a CD and describes what’s to come. Lee Marshall 2004 states how, it’s hard to understand how the consumption of pirated music affects the music industry and the actual affect it has on artists and companies; though I’m guessing is severe. The actual cost of producing a CD has dropped over the last 10 years due to lack of demand and popularity of sales. The actual music stores that were once purely CD’s, have consolidated into other areas like DVD’s and some electronic equipment. This is due to lack of CD sales and low demand.
The emphasis on p2p file sharing programs has risen over the last 8 years. Back in the late 90’s and early 00’s p2p file sharing wasn’t common and really only consisted of Napster, which was used predominantly for music. These days’ p2p file sharing programs allow users to download music, movies, games, pictures and also software. Since Napsters official launch in 1999 many p2p file sharing agents have become apparent and easily accessible internationally. An article from the AAP General News 2005 states that, some of the biggest names in Australian music have backed a court ruling against the owners of music file-sharing technology Kazaa, which is used to download pirated music, depriving artists of their royalties. An article by Joelle Tessler 2005 states that the, US Supreme Court determined that Internet file-sharing companies can be held liable for copyright infringement if they encourage use of their software to trade pirated music and movies. Overall the current p2p file sharing programs and companies are killing the CD industry, though can be held responsible for infringements on copyrights.
In conclusion I would like to reiterate how downloaded music is affecting CD sales. http://www.betanews.com/article/Digital_music_downloads_wont_replace_CDs_says_report/1195502891, this website states how, sales of music CDs are continuing to decline annually at double-digit rates and also that downloads of digital music are increasing. Kathy Ishizuka 2004 states that, there is a number of reasons for illegal downloading, from not having the money to pay for software (51 percent) to the rationale that lots of people do it (33 percent). Currently, nearly all countries are guilty of downloading music illegally. The cost difference between purchasing a CD and downloading a song is bias. Music stores, artists and companies are affected with this increase in downloaded and will continue to be. Overall the current situation is defiantly favoring downloaded music and will continue as the internet advances and more people obtain access.
